Artist Statement and Resume

Lisa Miller

My life and my world took an unexpected turn in 2011 when my husband and I bought a converted 1929 barge (canal boat).  Now we spend six months a year cruising the canals and rivers of Europe.

For me life has always been a journey, be it my travels, raising my children and husband, or art.  I began as a fiber artist in 1993.  Quilting enriched my life beyond all expectations.  No longer do I view my surroundings with even the slightest indifference.  Faces, flowers, clouds, doors and windows, architecture and landscapes have been transformed into ideas waiting to be turned into art.

Because of art life has become a journey of ever expanding horizons.  An early introduction to traditional quilting gave me the opportunity to express my personality through the use of vibrant colors.  Over the years studying with well-known quilt instructors I moved away from traditional quilting.  In discovering raw edge piecing it was as if I were painting, only with fabric.  Hand stitching and embellishment became wonderful additions to quilting. The introduction of heavy stitching for additional texture and depth began to lead me in an entirely new direction.  In 2011 I took up painting for the first time in my life.  Now, when I pick up a paintbrush I am almost overwhelmed by the possibilities of what can be done with canvas, paint and thread.  Being exposed to the works of artists such as Wolf Kahn and Mark Rothko inspired me to begin painting with oil on canvas.  Once the paint dries I stitch extensively over the canvas.  The possibilities of what can be done to a canvas with paint and thread are endless.

My interests and passions (in addition to my family) go beyond painting and stitching.  They include cooking, photography, travel, hiking and writing.  Life should be exciting.  For me it is a grand adventure.

From May through November while living on my barge Rabelo I write a blog: lowbridgeeverybodydown.blogspot.com.  Please join me on my journey.  Send me a note as well.  I would love to hear from you.
